One word that describes this book is claustrophobic!
For the crime and thriller fans out there, this book has it all, murderers, psychopaths, lies, missing children and dark crimes. All in one setting, a mental institution. The setting for this book was spot on.
I was hooked, intrigued and repulsed throughout. I thought Connie was likeable, most certainly unconventional, and at times very venerable. Her mixture of personality is woven into the story so well it goes unnoticed which was setting us up for what was a brilliant ending!
Connie is not alone in her investigation - but I will say nothing about that

When I say I was gripped, I was GRIPPED. I tore through this in a day. ‘The Institution’ is an exhilarating, electrifying and suspenseful read that surely must earn a place as one of the top thrillers of this decade. Helen Fields’ writing and plotting is insanely clever. Everyone who likes this genre should have read this.

While I liked this book, having heard great things about it, I was expecting to love it, and I didn't really get that. I enjoyed learning each of the characters back stories, but at times the book felt like it dragged a little bit, particularly during the middle. Overall it was a good read, and had a few good twists, but it didn't wow me in the way I was expecting.
