Such a good series. The mysteries are complex, but it's the characters that keep me coming back.
fast-paced
This is another book in the Ian Rutledge series that I've been reading all out of order. This was one of the best so far. Ian must investigate a case in Cornwall where four young women of good class have been accused of attempting murder against a drowning man. Kate Gordon, one of Ian's friends, is one of the women. The story has a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing and ended very satisfactorily. Also, we get to see lots of the lovely Cornish countryside and villages. Another very good book in a very good series.
mysterious
slow-paced
I still love this series & this character, but I feel that a) the mysteries are suffering. Ideas are good, but too obtuse in execution. Plus, I would love it if there were some character development with Rutledge that happened at a more than glacial pace. Surely a relationship with a life human wouldn't be out of place by this point?

This is my first book by Charles Todd. With it being book 18 in the series, readers can read it as a standalone. Parts in the book did refer back in time but doesn't make a new reader lost. It has a nice mystery, but a bit slow for me.
3.5 Stars.
I enjoyed this more than I have enjoyed any of the other Rutlidge books I have read. The mystery was a bit trickier, although I didn't love the resolution. I also liked that Hamish wasn't quite as present for much of this book, because I've never been a huge fan of that aspect of these books.
Received from Edelweiss.

What a complicated mystery. It has been awhile since I have read an ian Rutledge story and it was an interesting story. I'm anxious to see what happens next.
Way faster paced then a lot of Inspector Rutledge - I liked it! An interesting story, but slightly disappointed with the wrap-up of the mystery. As with most Charles Todd the book felt like it was going in circles most of the time (which is perhaps accurate for detective work), but had interesting twists and turns.
