Widely recognized as horrible and I have to agree. I only read this while studying Martha Gellhorn (Hemingway paints an unflattering picture of his ex-wife as "Dorothy").

I don't usually like Hemingway and I adored this. Something about his writing shines in the short story, all the moreso regarding the Spanish civil war. Moving, painful, underscored with hope. Just gorgeous and melancholy at once.

Hemingway most certainly has a way with depicting the toll and strain of war and battle.
