some really striking imagery in this. the mother leaving her dead son atop the mountains with the crucifixes, the descriptions of the weather and the police square, the entire odyssey of the priest. i was very engaged in the story and found it easy to read. i thought all the characters were really likeable and the priest and his motivations were well developed. some great religious themes in here, and even though i am not religious myself, i found this sort of heavy introspective style of writing to be quite appealing. the dialogue was a standout, and i couldn't help but laugh at the priest and his wit and cynicism. got the book from the rotary second hand sale with niamh.
I really liked it even though I'm no longer Catholic. A little less amusing than his other books and thus a little more difficult to read. Nevertheless a compelling read.
45th book I’ve managed to knock off the notorious 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list. ✅
That being said: This is exactly my kind of book, but extremely hard to recommend for a number of reasons. That’s probably odd coming from a pretty stout atheist, but I guess a meandering, tragic novel on theological philosophy just really gets my blood pumpin’.

A fantastic examination of catholicism and morality. Being raised as a catholic myself, the “catholic guilt” that dominates this novel is perfectly expressed. The writing is concise and feels surprisingly modern for being 85 years old.
The whisky priest is a fully realized, complex character and following his journey and the characters he encounters was such a fulfilling experience. The environment in which the story is set is so vivid that it almost functions as a character in and of itself. I will absolutely be returning to Graham Greene’s world in the future.

I think this will be a soft DNF. I imagine I’ll like it but I need to mentally give it more attention than I want to right now.
