My first 2 star review for this series. Nothing happened until the last hour, and it seems the entire point was to show
Brunetti and Elektra are friends but instead of showing that through interactions it was done via the lens of “oh does Brunetti love her romantically? ooh” with no agency on Elektra’s part, and
as boring as it was an unnecessary plot line.

Another great Donna Leon mystery full of complex characters, subtlety, and great narrative. I shall be reading the entire series.

The Brunetti series. The love of Venice and frustration at the political situation and the mistrust of authority always come through.

Every time I open a new book by Donna Leon, I'm introduced to another new Venetian community. This time it's the sandspit which is home to the close-knit fishermen of Pellestrina. Two murders, a community that won't tell its secrets, two Police employees who go incognito to the place to dig out its secrets.... all this adds up to an exciting story that ends in an unusually bloody and violent way. As always, it's not an 'and they lived happily ever after' conclusion
