Warning: spoilers ahead

So I really enjoyed The Duke and I until I got to the horrific sexual assault scene between Daphne and Simon. Marital rape is never ok and should not be used as a plot device. The scene soured the entire book for me.

However, I will say that Quinn’s writing is excellent. I’m on the second book now and it is far less problematic than the first. My suggestion for all those interested in Bridgerton series would be to watch the first season on Netflix and then jump into the second book.

Let me preface this with: I do not usually read regency or period romances. I'm a strictly contemporary gal, and this might be why I had trouble with this.
The first half, I was enjoying it. Sure, there was misogyny, but it was dealt with well since that was the time for it. Quinn did a brilliant job balancing a strong heroine and the time period. Simon and Daphne had brilliant banter and there was a lot of sexual tension.
But then... **SPOILERS** the duel and the marriage all happened at the halfway point and I was like... What are we going to do with the next 6 hours? Is this going to be 6 hours of unnecessary angst? The answer is yes. And while I hate unnecessary angst, I could have overlooked it because I liked the couple. But then... The whole non consent plot. For both Daphne and Simon, each character did awful things to each other in a relationship, and I spent the last half of the book wanting to scrub my skin off. I'm not sure I'm in the mood to read another regency romance after this.

This book is fantastic until very problematic scene. The scene is important to the plot, about 2/3 through the book.
