This has a lighter, female version of a Harry Potter story feel. It takes a bit to keep the characters and elf terminology straight, but Sophie the elf finding out she's not human and has elf powers, is very similar to Harry's coming of age to what he really is. Willing to try book 2.

This book is my go-to comfort book. I love the whole series and no joke read them at least 4 times a year. Once you fall into the story you just get trapped and you really feel like the character. You go on the adventures, understand the life, and feel how they feel. I really connected to this book too. Shannon Messenger did an incredible job writing this.
This book took me forever to finish. Partly because it was far too cold to go for my morning walks and also because I was not too invested in the story of a human elf girl with powers. One of my students recommended this book to me and I read (well listened to) all 400 pages of it. I can see why kids would be charmed by this book but I have never really been into fantasy.
