I cant even count how many times i've reread this book its soooo good and i totally reccomend!
Keeper of the Lost Cities und ich hatten erstaunlicherweise ein paar Startschwierigkeiten. Ich hatte im Vorfeld enorm viel Gutes gehört über die Reihe, man konnte der Werbung ja auch kaum entkommen. Entsprechend hoch waren meine Erwartungen zu Beginn auch, aber so richtig ist der Funke zunächst nicht übergesprungen. Ich habe mich ein wenig gelangweilt, bin häufig abgeschweift und habe mir nur mit Mühe und Not die Namen der vielen Protagonisten merken können, wobei ich gestehen muss, dass ich konsequent zwei oder drei Figuren ständig durcheinanderbekommen habe.
Erst mit der Zeit wuchs meine Faszination für die Geschichte, dann allerdings so schnell und merklich, dass ich etwas traurig war, als das Ende kam. Ich hing mittendrin in Sophies Abenteuer und wollte ihr nicht von der Seite weichen. Sie ist so eine herzensgute und liebenswerte Figur, ich fand das kleine Mädchen direkt von Anfang an sympathisch und hatte stets das Bedürfnis, sie zu beschützen, auch wenn das meistens gar nicht nötig war. Man hat ihr zwar häufig angemerkt, dass sie erst zwölf Jahre alt ist, aber dafür hat sie in wichtigen Situationen eine bemerkenswerte Stärke und Reife bewiesen, die man Kindern in ihrem Alter gar nicht zutrauen würde, wirklich große Klasse.
Die restlichen Figuren schmolzen für mich leider ehrlich gesagt zu einer undurchsichtigen Masse, ich hatte echt Probleme mit den ganzen verschiedenen Namen. Den ein oder anderen konnte ich ausmachen, doch so richtig fehlerfrei identifizieren könnte ich wohl die wenigsten. Das hat mir aber nicht so viel ausgemacht, ich war da einfach zu unaufmerksam.
Was mich tief beeindruckt hat, war die Konstruktion der ganzen magischen Hintergründe und Städte. Das Worldbuilding mit all seinen Details zu entdecken, hat unfassbar viel Spaß gemacht, ich habe es geradezu genossen, mit großen Augen und Sophie im Schlepptau, bzw. eher sie mit mir durch die Welt zu streifen.
Mein Fazit:
Ich habe ein bisschen Eingewöhnung gebraucht, aber mochte die Geschichte im Endeffekt sehr gern. Ich feiere das Worldbuilding sowie die Protagonistin und freue mich unheimlich auf die Fortsetzung. Von mir gibt es 4,5 und gerundet volle 5 von 5 Sternen.

This first installment was really good and Shannon Messenger has done an amazing job at writing it. The characters were relatable, the world-building was felt so real, and the plot was super intricate. But there were a couple of things that were a little annoying. Shannon uses a lot of word repetition which get a little boring as the book progresses. Another thing I hate is how Keefe and Dex basically play 'Tug of War' and Sophie is the rope. But nonetheless, I still enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I loved this book. (Shout out to my sister PrincessOfParis for getting me into this series) it was full of exciting scenes and really good characters. (*ahem* KEEFE) one of the good things about this was the climax was so unexpected. I just enjoyed this to the max.

2.5/5 - As I don't have the option to give out half-stars, I've rounded my rating down to 2/5 as this book wasn't engaging or memorable enough for me personally, but I would probably round it up to 3/5 for younger readers who fall within the target audience. The world-building and the way in which the author chose to propel the plot forward felt lazy to me. The characters and school setting were enjoyable though.
I've seen reviews comparing this series to Harry Potter. I've only read this first instalment so far, so I can't say if the rest will live up to the hype, but unfortunately for me, there is no comparison - Harry Potter (if we're just talking about the work of literature and not the author) is the clear winner in all aspects (complexity of writing, plot, world-building, pacing etc.). I do not think it is a fair comparison to make, however, as this definitely reads a lot younger.

3 1/2 stars, mostly because I'm not the target audience. Interesting story that at first seems similar to Harry Potter but that is only a superficial similarity. It is definitely different and nothing like I imagined. The author was continually able to surprise me and keep me guessing. If I was 12 I would probably rate this at least 4.
Keeper of Lost Cities was a good book, not amazing, but good. It kept my interest, as well as, elicited emotions from me.

Speaking about the kids, I did feel that the 12 year olds were written as if they were older than 12. Also, the older kids the 15 year olds I couldn't understand why they were hanging out with a whole bunch of 12 year olds. I remember being 15 and not wanting my friends little brothers and sisters constantly with us. That was somewhat confusing and surprising. Other than that I quite enjoyed the story and I'm definitely going to continue to the next book.
