I would rate this book 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 stars. I didn't like the characters, and certain aspects of the plot seemed unrealistic to me. The thoughts of the characters sometimes struck me as odd, too. However, I never really wanted to stop reading as I was doing so, and I guess that's something.

This is my ideal middle grade. Down to earth and tugs at your heart strings while still maintaining that childhood-innocence perspective. There were a bit too many POVs for my taste, but overall this book was so sweet. Definitely something I wish I had read when I was a kid.

TWs: bullying, ableism (multiple uses of the r-word), fatphobia, coma

I read this book because so many 5th and 6th grade students, both boys and girls, recommended it to me. This page turner takes a look at the inner workings of a classroom dynamic headed by the teacher that we all wish we'd had. Delightful.

It's fine. To be honest I feel like the kids are too nice/mature, haha. I know they're in fifth grade, but kids are not all nice and respectful all the time. They're kids. This applies to the rest of the books (especially the last two).

Wow - each voice here is really believable and brings an interesting perspective. I imagine we'll have a great 4th grade book club discussion!

I've read this book a long time ago when I was in elementary school and decided to reread it now. Nothing has changed. , I absolutely adore this book! I loved all the characters and their development throughout the story. I loved their interactions with Mr. Terupt as well, I remember wishing for a teacher like him back then.

I would definitely read this book again for the nostalgia and characters.

I'm shocked at how awful this book is. One of the character literally said "I'm crying, I guess this is what accepting responsibility does" or something. It's so heavy handed and over explained and does a disservice to children. Ok bye.

I loved reading this to the 5th graders. Such a good story and one that kept them engaged and wanting to continue reading each day
