A very pleasant read about Land Girls in England during WWII. The romance is formulaic and the ending predictable, but the details about life there during the war and the descriptions of the class system were really good.
I went back and forth between a 1 star and 2 star rating for this silly predictable book about well I'm not sure... the plot changed and became more ridiculous with every new character and chapter. I finally settled on 2 stars because I did learn about the Women's Land Army during WWI. Oh and the tittle - not once is the term victory garden used in the book.

I love a solid historical fiction and this one is. Set during World War I, Emily Bryce is turning 21 and is ready to be a part of the efforts of the war despite what her parents want her to do - find a suitable boy and marry him! She goes against her parents wishes and enlists to be a land girl where she helps out on farms where the men have gone off to war.
I love it when I read a historical fiction book set in a time and a place that I have read about before but takes a unique viewpoint and makes me think about the time and place in a whole new way. I didn't know anything about the land girl program before this book and didn't even think about how the farmers survived while their sons and even the husbands went far to fight the war. I know I have said it before but I love it when I learn something when reading a historical fiction but it isn't obvious until I am done reading the story!

I quite enjoyed this book although Emily’s naivety after reading the damn journals made my eyes roll. The relationships among the women were the highlight and it’s a good story. I got cocky about how predictable it was and didn’t see the ending coming, which bumped it up to 3.5/four stars. I’ve been in a reading slump and this was just what I needed. A quick, fun read with poignant details from 1918.
The Victory Garden is a very enjoyable book. It is not your typical war novel. Victory Garden revolves around a girl named Emily Bryce who when see turns 21 and can legally make her own decisions joins the Women's Lady Army in the final months of WWI. A few months prior to this she met an Australian pilot at a local hospital and defied her parents by getting in engaged to him. in the Fall of 1918 Emily found herself in a predicament of needing to look for a new home. A village accepted her and three of her fellow Lady Girls as their own.
While in her new home Emily discovered an old diary that contained herbal remedies, which she starts making. But there is a "curse" on her new home. This novel is a lovely story of people from varying backgrounds who in the most difficult of circumstances become their own family. It is also about how people can surprise us.
If you love the historical novel. especially war novels, but aren't looking for and action or spy novel this might be the one for you. It is a quick read and isn't a heavy novel.

I took a chance on this audiobook and I loved it!! I didn't want it to end. I would love to see where the characters are a few years after this ends. I normally listen on the ride to work and on the way home. I was listening to this as much as I could.
It was a cute enough story. It had a predictable plot but I liked the characters and finished the book in just a few hours .
I really wanted to like this book, on paper this book seemed like it was written just for me. I love historical fiction and gardening, I have black cat and my name is even Bobbi... but I was greatly disappointed. I could not bring myself to care about these characters, I found excuses not to read just to avoid this book, and the plot lines were so cliche and took forever to unfold just as you would guess. I finally skipped to the end just to finish and be done with it. I did choose the audible version, so maybe it would be better in print or at a different time...
This might be my favourite Rhys Bowen yet! The story follows Emily Bryce as she transitions to adulthood in 1918. The war has made people anxious and upset social conventions. This provides opportunities as well as tragedy. Gender and class take centre stage in the tensions of this novel and Bowen weaves a really interesting and engaging story of belonging.
