The Victory Garden follows the life of Emily Bryce during the final year of WWI. A young Englishwoman whose mother hopes to match with someone of standing, Emily instead falls in love with a brash and engaging Australian pilot. Despite her parents' wishes, Emily also becomes a "land girl" to aid her country during the conflict. Circumstances eventually lead her to a small village where she'll forge new friendships, meet those who wish her ill, discover the healing power of herbs, and learn to stand on her own two feet. Though this started off a bit slowly, I was drawn in by the writing and soon came engaged with the characters. Reading as Emily grew more confident and forged her own way despite a difficult situation made this an enjoyable and satisfying read.

all together too saccharine for me but still an undemanding read

I'll start by saying The Victory Garden is 100% not my usual genre. It was a little too romantic and idyllic for me. Overall, though, it was a touching story about love and friendship and doing what is right for you. Not a book I'm head over heels in love with, but it's good.

I enjoyed reading this book, but the ending felt sudden and a bit too neat. Overall entertaining read and easy to get list in for a few days!

DNF at 50% VERY formulaic and predictable.
