3 1/2 stars. I was given this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
This is the story of Emily, a young woman who wants to contribute to the war effort during the Great War and the effects of the choices she makes as she tries to navigate her way in the world.
It’s a compelling, cute little story. I enjoy stories of the home front and I liked learning a bit about the Women’s Land Army. Emily is a likable character who makes mistakes but learns from her actions. From other things I have read, I think the blanket acceptance of Emily’s “condition” from almost everyone she met seemed a little unrealistic and things were a little too easy for her. I also had a hard time accepting the extent of her relationship with Robbie. I don’t think it was built up enough but I am willing to suspend disbelief.
The first half of the book follows a fairly predictable path but then the second half is where this story varies from where I thought it might go. It’s not suspenseful at all but the little twist in the end was a surprise.

I had such high hopes for this one-- the WWI setting, the British countryside, gardening? I thought I would love it. I also thought that there would be a victory garden in there somewhere (silly me). The book was okay, but everything worked out so nicely for the girls that it was like a Hallmark movie rather than historically accurate. Also, the ending was really abrupt.
I tried to listen to this on audible after I had the first 3 chapters for free on kindle.
The Audible audiobook is really hard to listen to, so I will wait until I can actually read this thing.
‘CUS it looks promising, it definitely has potential to be a great read, I just need to do it myself
