The Victory Garden

Historical novel set in the middle of WWII. Sort of a coming of age novel, as a young sheltered woman tries to break free of her family's control and set up a life for herself. In the process she discovers a knack for gardening, which leads her in a new direction.

I really enjoyed the story and the character development as the sheltered young woman who had no useful skills learned to fend for herself, care for herself, and stand up for herself.

This book took me a while to get into. The first hundred pages were rather boring to me, and I wasn't a fan of the romance. But once the book hit the halfway mark, and I thoroughly enjoying myself. It's a sweet story, though the characters aren't highly developed. The books takes some mysterious twists and turns I've come to expect from Bowen's more cozy mystery reads, and I thoroughly enjoyed the diary parts and the herb garden scenes. While the book wasn't perfect, it is a fun, light read with such a sweet ending!

Meh. Not the worst and not the best. Just meh

Captivating storyline

Maybe it’s because I’m also reading a technical book, but the language and writing style felt very simple. I could not put it down because of the storyline.

WWI historical novel, based on those left on home front, a bit of romance, one non-graphic sex scene.

Gave this book five stars because my time just flew while reading this one. It was an easy read from the first to the last page, plus the book cover, the paper quality and the text are all beautiful.

Cheesy but good story

This story was a good one but I felt like no one would speak the way this is written. I’m glad I got it on prime reads.

Dragged on for far too long. A formulaic cast & plot, unlikable & boring protagonist, and an elementary writing style.

Felt a little bit formulaic, but I enjoyed it.

It is the last part of WW1 and Emily is determined to grow up and get out of the shadow of her parents and do something for the world. Her journey is an interesting one with friends and foes along the way. The parallel story of the cottage ‘witch’ doctor added drama. I liked the insight into the world left behind for women to try and figure out because so many men were lost. A few parts are a little unbelievable. If you enjoy war stories mixed with romance, this one might be for you.

This was enjoyable enough but I felt like the story was all over the place. I wasn’t invested in the character or her relationships. A good WWI read but nothing too exciting or deep.
