I'm frankly amazed I got through this audiobook. Why on earth they chose a female narrator, I will never understand. It made it more painful than it needed to be, and it was already quite painful.
I don't think I will ever be late-Victorian enough, or understand Scottish Presbyterianism enough, to enjoy this book. It was the most a-Christological vaguely-Christian thing I've ever encountered. For that, it was remarkable, I suppose. But the dragging on and on and on of the plot, through not only the same topics but the same character-types and scenes over and over, was devastating to the psyche.
Shoulda just stuck with that one little quote I learned from the C.S. Lewis George MacDonald anthology as a teenager. I'll never learn.

I honestly don't know. It was confusing and idk I just didn't feel it.
This was one crazy read. I only wish I'd had some idea before starting what the book was about. Very different from Phantastes.
(Notes for my own reference):
p143: "she fears and therefore hates her child..." (this whole chapter is great, chapter XXX)
p189: conversation between Mara (lady of sorrow) and princess (Lilith) on giving up self to find self. and p191: Lilith going through hell.
