This short, 108 page novella is dedicated to giving a formal ending to Newt, one of the main characters in the Maze Runner series. Taking place during the latter events of 'The Death Cure' (3rd book in the book series), Crank Palace tells the real, detailed story of Newt-from inside his own mind ridden by the Flare-as he searches for meaning in a life gone horribly wrong. After leaving his friends so they wouldn't see him descend into the depths of the virus, Newt tries to fulfill a newfound destiny before his path leads to its inevitable conclusion—and one last untold meeting with his best friend.

This book was surprisingly wholesome despite the whole Newt-having-the-Flare-and-going-insane thing! It was a neat look inside both Newt’s mind, and Crank Palace. However, it’s been so long since I read the main series that this was more of a nostalgia read than something I could get invested in. This was added to by the fact that to me, this books feels a bit like a bridge between the Maze Runner series and the new Maze Cutter book and its sequels (instead of an addition to the Maze Runner). If you want to read the Maze Cutter, then this is probably a bonus. I had forgotten that Newt was a teenager, and this kind of distanced me from him because I’m not the same age as him anymore, but I liked having more “screen time” for my favourite character so overall I enjoyed reading the book.
