Holy moly. This one surprised me. I have had it for a week and a half, borrowed from a coworker, and hadn't been in a rush to read it. Then I started reading it last night and finished it in under 12 hours (and I was sleeping for most of those!).
The book is fast, lots of action. Lots of twists and turns. Totally understand why this is a very popular book with middle schoolers who get weighted down by too much exposition. I'm not a big fan of dystopia, post-apocalypse, alien invasion stories, but this was just gripping enough. Still not sure if I'll read the second book. I'm tempted...

The 5th Wave Lite. Major grumps: the insta-love with Rice, the passes that she gives Rice for keeping information from her (the same information that her mother knows, as well as Babys' origins). I would have like to see Amber and the other group beyond what was shown. They're story seems more interesting than Amy and the overbearing villians in the cult compound. All in all, the book was acceptable and I plan to read the next installment.

I'm giving this book four stars because the first half was so good. It's engrossing and terrifying, and I could not put it down. The second half was not as good for me, but it is still a great read, and I am recommending it to my kids! Read my full review at Gator Book Chomp.
This is NOT a zombie novel.
There's none of this:

Or this:

The creatures are a curious invention and deserve much more than being referred to as zombies.

My mind is blown. In the After has to be one of the best debut novels I've read in a very long time. It kept me up all hours of the night and well into the morning. It's consuming and exciting and scary good. You'll sit there not wanting it to end. I need more!!
The story was pretty predictable in this book yet, I enjoyed it because the characters were well written. They reacted in ways that made sense to their surroundings and were well fleshed out. I liked that the two main characters lived in silence and talked in their version of sign language to avoid detection. I will probably read the next book in this series since it was left with room for the book to be a series starter.
Ooooooooooo...this was a great read. I really really felt drawn to the story and the characters...I was invested in what happened to them but also because of them. And, of course, Them. Best bad guys ever. And such a cool twist-surprise that I actually figured out a bit before it was officially revealed. Diggin' the whole vibe of the book and very much looking forward to the conclusion in June!
