I found this book completely captivating. I think it was the alien - zombie creatures that really held my interest for the most part. I've read about alien invasions and zombie outbreaks, but a combo? It left me hyped up like a kid on cotton candy and mountain dew. This book begins as the blood and gore hit the streets, leaving Amy alone. And I was instantly involved in Amy's survival. Often I read reviews before writing my own, I like looking over other's ideas and opinions about the material before I start my own rant. No need in repetitive reviews, right? I see some reviewers criticizing Amy's survival behavior and negatively rating the book because it didn't gel with reality. My objection to those types of reviews is that this is Fiction. FICTION. And it's Science Fiction at that. I suppose I could see pointing out things being unrealistic in historical fiction for instance, but not science fiction. So yes, Amy acted quiet stupidly for a girl with over obsessive parents. She survived even though she made really, really bad decisions. This wasn't an issue for me at all. Also, when I'm reading post-apocalyptic reads, I don't look for a lot of character development. I mean I think the ultimate goal is just surviving to eat the next meal. If a series goes on for a long period of time without depth or growth then yes, I can see my attention turning from the repetitive nature of survival. So for the most part this book made me very happy. I enjoyed watching Amy try to survive. I enjoyed that she was brazen enough to ask questions. And I look forward to book two. The twist in the book didn't really shock me. And my only disappointment in the book was the fact she stayed in the Ward for as long as she did without ANYONE rising up. But I suppose in the end things ended the way they needed to.
Kept My Attention
Not a bad story but some of the scenes appeared rushed and could have been provided with more detail. Looking forward to the next in the series.

This book series is incredibly dear to my heart. This was about the fourth or fifth time I’ve reread the book. I highly recommend the audio book it’s narrated by one of my favs.
This book holds up. I first read it in middle school and found it again later as an adult. If you liked the hunger games, the last of us (the show or game), myster thrillers, and smart but anti-authority main characters this is for you.
The world building is so thoughtful and intriguing also the other characters feel well throughout and real.
I don’t say this often but the second book is even better than the first! Read this book already!!

2.5/5
After a very promising first third, this one took a nosedive straight into cliche territory and never left. Rather disappointing, especially since I called it about 50% in.

In The After is book one in this series. I picked up this book because one it sounded really good and two I am currently all about dystopia themed stories. I instantly fell in love with Amy and Baby. Amy is a perfect heroine. She is strong, smart, and is personable. Even though Baby never talked she still made an impression on me. She spoke volumes with just her acts. I am not usually a fan of stories told in the first person but it just worked and it worked well for this book. I helped to bring me in closer to the story and the world that Amy and Baby lived in. To be honest I kind of thought the people of New Hope were scarier than the zombies. Which is way creepy. You never want the humans to be worse than the zombies. This made for some really good reading. The ending was a good one. I can not wait to read book two in this series. I can picture this book being turned into a movie or several like the Twlight series, only better. Sorry not a fan of the twilight books or movies.
I actually really really enjoyed this. I disliked Amy in the beginning, but i thought her character development was great, and grew to love her by the end. I highly suggest giving this story a try, if you are a fan of post apocalyptic stories!
I agree with many of the reviews I saw on here that day the first half of the book is better. I felt like some ideas didn't quite fit.
This was really 3.5 stars. Amy is 14 and, home alone when They invade. 3 years later, we learn that They are not aliens as we are lead to believe. But at any rate, Amy is under the impression that both her parents are dead. She is a pretty typical teen. She falls apart when the invasion happens. But quickly pulls herself together when she realizes she has to survive. She survives because she studies the creatures. She also survives because her mother had installed an electronic fence around their home. One day she comes across a child. She just calls her baby. Due to the supersonic hearing of the "aliens" they have to be super quiet. Baby never learns how to speak. She is already about 4 when Amy finds her on one of her scavenger missions. Amy comes to love Baby like her own. Amy thinks of her life in two stages. Before and After.
Amy and Baby are rescued. As with any post apocalyptic haven, there are signs that you are no safer than you were outside with the obvious monsters.
Amy finds her mother.
What follows is some things you will have figured out. Maybe a few you might not.
Also a lukewarm romance and a one dimensional villain.
Pre rescue, Amy takes in a young woman named Amber. This is partially due to baby's insistence.
Amber sets them up. that is what leads them to be rescued.
Later at the "safe" haven, Amber sets the whole place up again. Again, to take over the safe haven and unleash the monsters on them.
Yet (after initially being angry) Amy doesn't think that getting rid of them is the answer?
The first part was good. The second OK. The third, also good.
Looking forward to the sequel.

All the dystopian books that are out there...this one is pretty normal. Right in there with the usual. But delightfully different.
The character was completely relatable. And her selfish teenage ways were not glossed over. Yes, I will read more in this series!
