I think this boom explains really well how women feel in a men’s world. Also, I love the small gestures between Effy and Preston. I do think that their intimacy happened really fast but at the same time, they were kinda running out of time. It was a good book and definitely a fall book 😊

⭐ DNF – Couldn’t stay engaged
I really wanted to like A Study of Drowning, but unfortunately, it just didn’t hold my interest enough to finish. The premise had potential, and I pushed myself through a good portion of the book hoping it would click — but it never quite did.
The pacing felt slow, and I found it hard to connect with the characters or feel invested in the story. In the end, I decided to DNF rather than force myself through it. Not for me, but I know others might enjoy the atmospheric style and literary tone more.

Ava Reid has a way with words! I unfortunately do not, but here we go! I put off reading this one because I saw so many mixed reviews for it, well I'm about to add a glowing review for it because I absolutely loved it!
The descriptive writing is so immersive when it comes to transporting you into the scene being set. The writing also had me empathizing with the characters. I could vividly picture Hiraeth, I could feel the cold whipping wind and rain, and I could feel Effy's discomfort and fear.
This may be YA, but don't let that lead you to believe that this isn't a complex read. The writing is sophisticated and the themes are heavy. The book surprisingly does not have any content warnings. Since SA is a major plot point and something the FMC (Female Main Character) is dealing with throughout the book, I feel that this is geared more toward mature YA readers.
This book also explores institutionalized sexism, patriarchy, grief, mental health, and survival, all in a gothic, haunting setting. All of that being said, without spoilers, I will say that I found the ending very satisfying. I picked up A Theory of Dreaming right away to continue following Effy's journey.
Overall, this was an excellent book and I highly recommend it!
