I really wanted to enjoy this book. It's a gothic dark fairy tale, set in a crumbling house on the sea, tackling themes of institutional sexism and abuse. I mean, sign me up. But the execution of the story just didn't work for me. As a first-time reader of Ava Reid's work, it's possible that her writing style simply doesn't align with my personal taste.
I found the general plot to be decent, providing a solid foundation for what could have been a gripping story. But yeahhh... then I had issues. The romance within the book felt forced and lacking any actual depth. I mostly rolled my eyes at the development of it. I found the exploration of the difficult themes to be handled quite heavy-handedly, which detracted from my enjoyment. Unfortunately, I also found the plot to be quite predictable. And while that doesn't always ruin a book for me, here it just added to my other issues. I had hopes for a suspenseful tale given the setup, and it just didn't deliver on that for me.
