Blackout is a collection of short stories written by a multitude of black female authors, including Nicola Yoon, Angie Thomas, Dhonielle Clayton, Ashley Woodfolk, Nic Stone, and Tiffany D. Jackson. The book follows a group of different characters in New York City as they navigate being stuck in a blackout.

There are six stories that make up the novel, each with characters who are trying to get to a block party in Brooklyn. The following stories are:

  • A Long Walk by Tiffany D. Jackson, which follows two exes who find themselves battling for the same job position. This story is the central story of the novel.
  • Mask Off by Nic Stone, which follows a bi teenage boy trying to explore his sexuality through an underground masquerade party.
  • Made to Fit by Ashley Woodfolk, that follows a girl who longs for a relationship, and unexpectedly meets the perfect girl who fits her dreams.
  • All the Great Love Stories... and Dust by Dhonielle Clayton, that follows two best friends stuck in a library during the blackout. One of them has a crush on the other and struggles to tell them.
  • No Sleep Till Brooklyn by Angie Thomas that follows a group of southern high school students who find themselves stuck in the blackout while on their way to New York for a school trip. One of the characters is caught in a love triangle between her boyfriend and his friend, and spends the story trying to decide what she wants.
  • Seymour and Grace by Nicola Yoon, which follows a Grace, a passenger in a Ryde (a fictionalized version of Lyft), and Seymour, her driver, who walk to the block party together after his car runs out of gas.

I enjoyed this novel so much! My personal favorite stories had to be Made to Fit and Mask Off. I love anything that includes lesbian/gay characters, and I felt that both Nic and Ashley handled the portrayal of being a gay/bi teenager very well.

This was another read for work, and definitely not my preferred genre. However, I was surprised by what I was able to find to enjoy. I think if you're someone who enjoys short, sweet, YA love stories, this book would be perfect for you. I will caution that these aren't romances, as not every one ends in a happily-ever-after or happy-for-now. But I will say that the main character in each story winds up fulfilled, whatever that might mean in their situation, so there are no bad endings in this book.

Aside from the obvious not-my-genre situation, the other thing I didn't like about this book was how inconsistently well anxiety was portrayed. Contrasting Mask Off with The Long Walk, I found the depiction of Tremaine's claustrophobia very relatable, and while at first Tammi's anxiety over the impending  bridge situation was also spot-on, at the end it evaporated in a puff of plot resolution. True love doesn't overcome crippling anxiety! That's like everybody cheering as the guy in the wheelchair gets up and starts walking at the end of the movie. It just…doesn't work like that. Sure would be nice if it did!

There's some LGB content in this book, for those who look for that. Mask Off is about two boys, and Made to Fit is sapphic(also ownvoices, or close enough — Ashley Woodfolk is bi). T+ content is limited to the background, however.

If rating just off my own opinion, I would probably give this a 3.5, based largely off of how much I (unexpectedly!) genuinely enjoyed No Sleep Till Brooklyn. However, because I have few constructive complaints and mostly just feel that it was Not For Me, I'm going to be generous and bump it up to a 4.

sooo good omg, like it made me so happy to read. it’s good for when you want a book that doesn’t take too much brain power to enjoy, but also requires a little reflection to fully and truly understand. i loved all the different tropes that were used in the series of stories and enjoyed how all the characters were somehow intertwined with one another. it definitely had some moments that were so good i could scream! overall, amazing read and super satisfying to read.
