I was going to give it 3 stars for being mildly entertaining, but the ending was a huge let down.

Fun twists and turns. But, the use of He said, she said, they said.. made the story feel choppy. The writing style could have been a bit more creative. I think that this is going to be one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

I definitely preferred the ending of the movie and I think the switch from a blog in the book to a vlog in the movie was a very smart one for the different mediums. Altogether an entertaining story, but I think I mostly enjoyed the book because I really enjoyed the movie...

This book made me want to fake my own death just so I could get out of reading it. This is the first time I've been really upset about the promise I made myself to never give up on a book before I've read the whole thing. It's a cheap rip-off of Gone Girl written with 1/116372th of Gillian Flynn's skill with words and narrative. Don't waste your time on this one. The characters are cardboard, and even when Bell switches narrators, they all have the same voice. The thing about the twin was sooo derivative and clear from the first introduction of the twin photo in Emily's house. I just feel like Bell threw all these tropes out - faked death, boring British abusive husband, naive friend who becomes scapegoat - but didn't have a grasp on what they meant or how to use them in a successful way. Ugh.

nope. non original .. it felt like it was someone's whiny facebook page talking about mom this, ,my friend that #richwhitepeopleproblems ...
i need to stop wanting to read things that are the next "gone girl" i <3 gone girl, but it should not be the marker for every psychological thriller that comes out ...
byeeeee

Every adult character in this story is batshit insane. Four stars because I kept picturing Blake Lively in THAT suit. You know the one.

Hated the ending. Loved the rest of the book. This is the one time where I hope the movie does something different.

I have never uncontrollably rolled my eyes so much in my life. Stephanie is an insufferable martyr. I couldn’t possible relate less to a character. This book was tough to get through, but I bought it, so I was determined to read it. There were so many troubling quotes that gave this novel a fanfiction-y feel. One thing that annoyed me constantly was that whenever Emily asked Stephanie, “do you understand?” Emily would always say that she did, but then literally the next sentence says “but I wasn’t sure if I did”. I’ve never been in a situation where I felt the need to be a sniveling sycophant agreeing to everything, but I guess whatever floats your boat. I was disappointed with the plot twist, I saw it coming, and the ending was anti-climatic. The only thing that I was actually pleasantly surprised by was the tone of Emily’s parts. I absolutely loved those parts. I loved how much of a psychopath she was, I loved how her mind worked, I just loved being in her brain. Overall kind of bummed that I didn’t just watch the movie instead 🤷🏽‍♀️
