Absolutely dreadful. I just....ya this novel was boo boo

2.5 Stars. Parts of this book were incredibly engrossing and other parts were tired and boring.

This had all the makings of a good thriller. Complex characters, good twists and a nice slow build to a big finish.
If only the editor hadn't phoned it in.
It reads like a first draft- mostly there and we can see where you're trying to get to, and that you have this REALLY good idea, but it needs a bit of fine tuning and polishing to really make it shine. The pacing was good, but you could tell the author was like an over excited child, overly eager to give away all the secrets- not unlike our primary narrator Stephanie, who, as described by Emily, seemed like she was begging to give her secrets away and was just waiting to be asked.
If maybe an editor had told her to cool it with the breadcrumbs, then maybe she could have pulled it off.
That, and if that same editor had told her to pick one ending and stick with it. Instead, she seemed to grab onto a handful of options and threw them all at the reader at once. The most surprising thing about the ending was that there was another chapter...and another...and another.
Worth reading, if only for the sake of comparing it to the movie. Which I plan to do tomorrow.
Update: The movie embraced the more nonsensical and ridiculous aspects of this book in stride. Would recommend over the book.

Reading a book, strictly to see the movie. Is always a good and bad idea. You need to read the first I think, because the book is always better. And yet it can also make you dislike the movie if its not as it "should" be compared to the book and the adaption is lacking. BUT this book, I honestly hope the movie is better. Because I really didn't like it much. The plot was all over the place and too similar to other stories before. They threw in a few moments that caught my attention and I DID enjoy the style of writing, switching between blog entries and then context and thoughts from different characters. It really helped you get a much wider few of the whole story and every angle. I did like that. But I hated Stephanie, she drove me insane with her "us moms," I thought Emily was an absolutely NUTSO, and then poor Sean needed to just.. man up.
This book was so annoying! The start was SUPER slow but then I started getting into it. As soon as I got into it I didn’t understand where the story was gonna go as I felt they’d told a large proportion of it already only a third of the way in. It was then that it started to slow down again until about two thirds of the way in when it got good again but unfortunately I was still left wanting more when I finished it. The ending was so lack lustre and totally not what I wanted. Quite disappointed.
The structure of this book also kind of irritated me. In the first third of the book we only hear from one persons perspective and then the blog posts she writes which I think is what made it slow down. After this we start to hear other people’s side to the story and made it more interesting, this should have happened from the start to prevent the slowness.
Finally... the characters are psychotic, and I did not like any one of them which is rare for me. Would not recommend.
I’m now off to see if the Netflix film of this book is any better (I’m not holding out much hope).

Definitely more plot twists than the movie, and this is definitely one of the times I watched it first as it prepared me for the first couple of them. I loved the unreliable narrators and blogging references. It wasn't an amazing book, but it kept my mind going. I would recommend watching the movie first.
