I ATE THIS BOOK UP!!! I love me a good enemies to lovers workplace romance!!! And the banter in this book was chefs kiss!!! Also I did watch the movie first and I feel like it’s an accurate representation of the book??? I don’t get the hate!!! Anyways this is a yes from me
Slow start, not much depth to characters at the beginning to draw me in
Oh this was fun. I got the audiobook, and I definitely recommend that format for my audiobook friends. I actually had to slow down my Audible from 3x to 2X because the banter between the two main characters. They were sharp and witty and rapid-fire. That was delightful. The writing was very strong.
I debated giving this 4 1/2 stars, but there were two things that held me back:
1.) I've never worked at a publishing company. But I have worked in corporate America for two decades. Executive assistants are very useful folks. But they are not the two internal candidates for the COO job, nor would they have "all of accounting" reporting to one of them. What? That completely lost me on this workplace romance, as they could have been competing for a different promotion, but COO? Hmmmm, too "wacky" and annoying.
2.) The "games" these two would play just shrieked of immaturity. For the most part they were likable, mature characters. Yes, I almost didn't pick up this book (despite the recommendation of so many of my Goodreads friends) because of the title because I'm not a big fan of "games" while dating. Most of the "games" they discussed were more like verbal sparring, and honestly, I think all of it was in Lucy's head and not something that Josh was actually participating in. I was ok with that explanation as it was just more proof of Lucy's lunacy in making everything a competition. But the concept of having to compete with your boyfriend and "win" every competition is pretty repulsive to me personally. It always reminds me of the saying, "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?"
Other than these two annoyances, which apparently did bug most of the Goodreads friends, it was very fun. Great dialogue, great settings, great characters, fun plot points, decent heat level - it is a romance. I'll definitely read more by this author.

I only started reading this to see what all the hype was about and all I can say is why was everyone so obsessed with this? It genuinely reads like something written by a teenager with the games they play at work.
