A slice of life story regarding a young woman struggling to find happiness and an old witch who both find friendship in each other to lift the loneliness they both feel. Rather than follow a plot we follow their everyday lives as they navigate this new friendship as well as the disapproval of the townsfolk who fear the old witch. This ended up being more emotionally charged and uplifting than I expected. And I ate all of it up. I wasn’t surprised to love the book as I’ve been loving all of Rachel Harrison’s books so far, but I didn’t expect it to become perhaps my favorite from the author. It feels like a comfort novel to me. Plus I need Ralph in my life, he is too adorable.

Writing quality and story were fine but I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be horror or a heartwarming friendship story or a romance and the more I read the less sure I was. Shifting focus was really distracting.

so for 3/4 of the book sam is cute, kind and funny, but then suddenly he's a cheating jerk? she was madly in love with him but can't communicate with him ab her feelings/sex? you're telling me they were together EIGHT YEARS and she can't remember how to kiss him?? 8 years and they're uncomfy together?! the final scenes with him make zero sense and they're clearly just a plot point.

i feel silly saying this, considering it's a novel about witchcraft, but everything that happens and is said in this is SO unrealistic. annie's actions and reactions don't make any sense whatsoever. she lives her whole life being "normal" and then suddenly has magic & doesn't seem to be very concerned with finding out how, she's just like "oh neat okay!" lol. the characters are all very one dimensional, descriptions of things are painfully long for no reason, and again, the characters don't make any sense in how they act.

pretty bummed because i really wanted to like this!

Very fun to read and not tasking to follow at all. I was surprised that I liked this so much because there wasn’t a super concrete plot and it was more so just following the main character Annie through her breakup. She makes friends with Sophie who is a glamorous lady in the new town she moved to. Of course, Sophie is not just a normal woman, and weird stuff happens, which leads Annie to finding her empowerment. Seems like a corny, done-before story line, but I actually loved this so much!! It was relaxing to read and not sure exactly why, but I couldn’t put it down.
