His Dark Materials is a truly fantastic tale. Set among several different worlds, it chronicles the adventures of Lyra and her daemon Pan, as well as their new friend Will.
What at first I thought was going to be a fantastical children's tale turned out to be so much more. A times it was humorous, heartbreaking, inspiring and incredibly dark. All three books contained within this volume were incredibly crafted and a joy to read. His Dark Materials is definitely appropriate for children, but vastly complex and should be read by people of all ages/

Fantastic
This trilogy was a true masterpiece of fantasy. The payoffs were enormous and the characters.. oh the characters! Lyra is an incredible girl, Will so serious and true (although I do wish there was a smidge more closure on his story). I so badly want a dæmon of my own, and I want to meet Iorek and Mary Malone and the gyptians, too!! And to befriend a mulefa would be magical. Basically I want to live in so many of Pullmans worlds!

Competent, but not very enjoyable. There's more detail in it than most YA fiction, but I'm no longer a YA, and I only paid the small amount of attetnion to it that I did becaue I had to study it. The auhtor has apparently produced much derivative work based on this initaila premise, but I cannot raise the enthusiasm to continue on with it.
