"I have never asked a bookseller for a book recommendation. Disclosing desires and expectations to a stranger whose only connection to me is, in abstract, the book, seems too much like Catholic confession, if only a more intellectualized version of it." (85)<--Loved this quote, did not love the book (and it's not really related to the content LOL)
LOST CHILDREN ARCHIVE has beautiful writing but suffers from being entirely too long and starring overly precocious children. The very mature children voices were especially annoying when her son narrates part of the book and it also takes on this strange dreamy air that I felt took away from the harder hitting immigration plot that had been the center up until that point. Additionally Lusielli's focus on the Apache made me uncomfortable. I think the unnamed narrator is poking fun at her husband's obsession with them but it wasn't entirely clear and it's told in a very mythological way (ie "the Apache fought hard but are now all gone) that felt disrespectful given that many tribes, including the Apache, still exist. I also wish the focus hadn't been on a disintegrating marriage, it was interesting at first but eventually grew tiresome and I wanted to read more about unaccompanied children crossing the border because that's where her writing was strongest, powerfully describing the experiences. I prefer Luiselli's nonfiction.

I think if I could finish this novel I’d be impressed by it but it’s too slow-moving for right now and it’s intellectually showy which is driving me nuts.

This book is somewhat confusing and boring. I never would have read it if it wasn’t required summer reading.
The addition of the elegies made the book difficult to read. It seemed a little all over the place.
