something about the way miriam toews writes siblings makes my heart swell with love for my own sisters. it's just so familiar, i think. i can't stay, and i sure as hell can't leave. i don't know how to help you but i will never stop trying. we kill each other, we love each other back to life. i have no patience left for you, yet i will find more because you are my sister.

as with irma voth, this book is funny and heartwarming and well-written. i find that a lot of books with a trio of characters at the core often end up with one side of the triangle being weaker than the other, but i didn't find that with this book. hattie/logan, logan/thebes, thebes/hattie—each relationship has its quirks, its weaknesses, its own little magic, equally strong.

I continue to be amazed by Miriam Toews ability to make me smile and laugh in the most tragic of circumstances, and I am eternally grateful for it.
