In the third book of the Takes of the Black Rose Guard, K.L. Bone takes us deeper into Mara and Edward's world and their relationship. This book shows us the relationship between Queen Clarissa, Liza, Mara and Edward. And we get to see more of Queen Clarissa and how cruel she can be. We see how little regard she has for her daughter all because she doesn't believe in love. We also learn more about Lady Sandra and start to wonder more of who she is and where she comes from. I can't wait to read more about her. Also we get to see more of Sarah and what happened to her after book 2. We learn more about secondary characters such as Jake (who is one of my favorite secondary characters). We see the relationship between Mara and Edward grow and and fall. KL Bone sure does know how to give you all the feels in the world just to shatter them. Can't wait to read Shadow of the Rose.

In this third installment, K.L. Bone is taking us deeper into Mara and Edward world. While the second book was focusing on the 25 years that Edward stayed prisoner, this one explore the dynamic between Queen Clarissa/Liza/Mara and Edward.

As the story progress, we are discovering little by little the true identity of Lady Sandra. I just can’t wait to know exactly who she is, that is so mysterious! While Mara is preparing to lead her men in an attack, Nolan is asking some question about Mara’s past. She decided to open herself and
she told him what happened between Liza/Edward/Queen Clarissa. She told him, mainly because she wanted the truth to be remembered in the event of her losing her immortal life.

The trip onto the memory lane of Mara was not sunshine and lollipops. Queen Clarissa has always been cruel and she still is to this day. In her world, love is nothing more than a weakness and she is doing all that she can to try to destroy it. It is especially true when she realized that Liza is also in love with Edward. Queen Clarissa decided to show Liza and Mara what she had in store for Edward and let me tell you, it was not pretty at all.

Edward is an intriguing character. He is always hurting Mara, but never intentionally. As if faith (or the roses) had their part to play in that seemingly damned love. He loved Liza and he still loves Mara, this book is exploring the reasons behind this love triangle, we also have to keep in mind that at that time he was dealing with his 25 years as a prisoner trauma. That is changing someone and leaving a lot of scars (emotionally and physically).

This story is an exploration of the suffering in an immortal love between 2 people that are unable to live their love together. It is still dark, but it is an amazing story. As I said before, K.L. Bone is an amazing writer, I was hooked from the first page and the pace is excellent throughout the story.

I recommend this whole series to everyone!!!
