The illustrations are gorgeous. The story is a little strange, but sweet.

The beginning of this is almost as sad as the beginning of Up, but don't worry, it'll all be okay. The art is really lovely.

January 2018 - Ben was really interested in this one, and I'd like to read it a few more times to really take in all the details. Update - we've read it a LOT and Ben loves it. He especially notices the expressions on the duckling's face and the small moments of humor, but also the storm - he always stops to talk about how the lightning looks like rips in the page.

I LOVED this book! A beautiful story about being lost, music, and coming home. This is a long picture book and would be a better one-on-one reading.

I think I just fell in love with a duck - the dog is no less endearing. The suspense waiting first to meet the duck - and then the ensuing peril creates the perfect tension for a love story. You might use this book to talk to older students about the use of music to convey feeling. Younger students might need more concrete examples and you could include something like Peter and the Wolf (the music). OR you might use it as a genre example of Fantasy. It might be hard for some people to believe that a wet violin might sound good, but then if you can believe a duck can play it with his wing feathers while swimming in the ocean... well.

Music brings the characters together after a storm and a wrecked boat. The duck falling in love with a violin was pretty adorable. :)
