Spoilers / Review for the Tricker-Treater and other stories by @brianamorganbooks
.
Back in October we read The Tricker-Treater by Briana Morgan. The Tricker-Treater is made up of a number of short stories including:
.
The Tricker-Treater - Moira isn't a fan of Halloween. Her young neighbour, Riley, warns Moira that the Tricker Treater is coming to town and soon a game begins ... A great start to the collection! The Tricker Treater is a great Halloween horror figure. Has a nice ending too! 4.5/5 ⭐
Moratorium - the narrator's mother's picture sits on the kitchen table... Hard to review this one without major spoilers. 4/5 ⭐
The Dive - Clive and Harry are looking for lost treasures... Another good one. I like the ending and the dive element. 4/5 ⭐
The Hanging of Constance Evans - Goody Evans is set to be hung as a witch in Salem. But can Faith, her daughter, save her?... A great witchy short story with a nice end! 4.5/5 ⭐
Charity - Father Hildebrand has been left a collection of items by his parishioner, Walter including a special cabinet... A very unexpected twisty turny tale that I really enjoyed! Nice, dark, twisted. 5/5 ⭐
The Session - Dirk and Shelia are in therapy... A quick, good story 4/5 ⭐
The Mistake House - There's something wrong here... A very unusual flash story that I liked! 4.5/5 ⭐
The Job - Katie and Luther are assassins. But the latest story hits close to home for Luther... A great one to end on! It reminded me of "In Bruges" in some ways! 4.5/5 ⭐
.
On the whole 4.5/5 ⭐ feels fair. I liked this one and look forward to more from Briana!
How about you guys? Have you read this collection?

How about you guys? Have you read this collection?
If you're considering buying this book, DO IT.
If it's already on your shelf but you haven't read it yet, READ IT.
Holy heck, this book was good. The content warning in the beginning tells you everything you need to be prepared for in the following pages. That warning is also a promise of what's to come, and Morgan keeps her promises.
This book was gruesome and sometimes savage, but there were also some really tender and heartfelt moments. I enjoy being taken on a rollercoaster of emotions when reading collections like these, and I finished this book nearly breathless from the ride.
This book was fantastic, the cover is incredible, and the author herself (who I am fortunate to call a friend) is a very supportive person in the Indie Horror community. Do yourself a favor and place your bets with the TRICKER-TREATER.
You can't lose.

A nice collection of short stories with a general theme of all things horror.
A really enjoyable read where you can suspend your belief for a short time and get lost in the blood and gore!
Some really good writing here and I'll be sure to check out more from this author in future.

This collection of shorts is a fun, quick read. Very original, and a good assortment of stories as well. Some land better than others, but I enjoyed them all.
TRICKER-TREATER AND OTHER STORIES is a collection of supernatural tales by Briana Morgan. An Eldritch terror visits an unsuspecting woman to claim a sacrifice for a wish granted to a little boy. A home that rearranges itself and its inhabitants. Two brothers set out to see in search of a lost prize at their peril. A man of the cloth is possessed by the spirit of a recently passed parishioner who seeks to complete his unfinished business and move on into the afterlife. Nothing is what it seems in these stories of misdirection and horror.
This is definitely a fun read. Briana Morgan really has a way of keeping the reader on their toes. Her stories were full of twists that just surprised the hell out of me. Trust me when I tell you, the author will shock you with some new horrifying truth you never saw coming. My favourite stories are The Tricker-Treater, The Mistake House and The Charity. These tales give readers a quick glance into the wicked imagination of Briana Morgan. There were some stories here that were off the genre. Not to say I didn't enjoy them. They just strayed from the theme.
I was excited to get my hands on TRICKER-TREATER AND OTHER STORIES. Briana Morgan wrote one of my favourite novellas of 2020. UNBOXED is an amazing read that set the bar for me as a reader. After getting a taste of the author's work and seeing the absolutely amazing cover, I knew I was in for a delightfully terrifying read. This is a short collection of stories by a talented author that I am always happy to recommend. I suggest you check this one out but be wary of The Tricker-Treater and his chicanery.

Wonderful horror anthology with a focus on interpersonal relationships.
Moderate: Body horror, Violence, Murder
3.5 rounded up for Goodreads!
THE TRICKER TREATER And Other Stories is Briana Morgan’s first all-in dive into horror. Earlier this year, I read Morgan’s UNBOXED; a stage play I would safely call horror-adjacent. THE TRICKER-TREATER is a collection of several stories ranging in length, genre, and style.
THE TRICKER-TREATER
MORATORIUM
THE DIVE
THE HANGING OF CONSTANCE EVANS
CHARITY
THE SESSION
THE MISTAKE HOUSE
THE JOB
In terms of my overall reading experience, I have to start with this cover. Obvious to seasoned horror fans, this is an Elderlemonlemon Design (Kealan Patrick Burke) and it is straight up eye-candy. The colors, the font, that creature--much like food, where I eat with my eyes first, this cover is all kinds of appetizing.
The title story is a great start to the collection exploring a trending trope in horror: the wicked game. I’ve read several stories this year where the main characters get caught up in some kind of horrible, high stakes game. Someone or someTHING forces the characters to make an impossible choice or else.
This was a fun story that I would love to see developed further into a full novella.
If flash-fiction is your thing, MORATORIUM and THE MISTAKE HOUSE deliver. I know some readers don’t like it because there’s not a lot there to sink your teeth into but I enjoy those ‘short sharp shocks’.
THE DIVE was interesting. I wasn’t sure if it was me or the story but I got confused somewhere along the way and I didn’t find my way back. I either missed a scrap of information that would have tied everything together or it just wasn’t there. Either way, I left that one feeling unsatisfied.
One of my favorite stories here is THE HANGING OF CONSTANCE EVANS. I’ve been mildly obsessed with the Salem Witch Trials ever since I learned about them in grade school history. I enjoyed Biana’s tale and I was sad to let go of Faith, Constance, and Thomas.
I’m glad that there was a possession story in this collection--CHARITY is about Father Hildebrand and his unique encounter with a cursed/haunted object. A pretty bleak ending. I enjoyed it.
Overall, I think this is an alluring introduction to the imagination of Briana Morgan. I’m excited to see where this journey into horror will take her--I’m keeping my bookshelves open to whatever she releases in the future.
