In three words: quaint, spiritual, and existentialist. Reminded me of a Saxon relative of Lampedusa’s “The Leopard.” 3.5 rounded up.

The blue flower is 'that elusive thing' that connects us to the way the universe truly works. A slice of the early life of Novalis; a beautiful, slow, gentle and subtle book. Transportative to the world of the late 18th Century.

Heartbreaking, humorous, elliptical, Romantic, and existential is ways I didn't expect. I definitely need to re-read to tie together the strands which I thought were loose, but were actually doing something completely different than I originally thought.

The blue flower
8.10.19
Fitzgerald writes a deceptively simple portrait of the early life of philosopher Friedrich von Hardenberg, who later took the name Novalis. The novel plays with the tension between seeing life as a symbol of a greater meaning and the pure physicality of the world. (Ficht is Fritz teacher). Fitzgerald’s writing displays the contrast perfectly. Cool, and intellectual concepts are always reduced to the psychical world, which in term represent greater meaning. (e.g. 191 the mining industry as poetry. ). Fitzgerald certain has sympathy with the poetic nature of Novalis’ philosophy, but her approached is nuanced. Just as often her description of characters is amusing and mocking versus sympathetic.

Projection. The blue flower is a symbol anything can be projected upon. Projection impose beauty on the world (p.191 Mining industry as poetry.). The same practice also imposes the characters desired on others, without any basis. Fritz’ 14 year old love - Sophie - without out anything to recommend her - becomes the ultimate object of Fritiz’s hopes. Does he see something we don’t or is just imposing his wishes on a blank slate.

Can the truth be experienced. p.170 what would the truth cost? They can’t reckon the truth. But they know they can get drunk

Superficial forms: Father who practices the superficial forms of religion and nobility.

P272. We think we know the laws to govern our existence we get glimpses perhaps only once or twice in a lifetime of a totally different system at work behind them. (Recalling a few events such as the time he saw Sophie for the first time). These were truly important moment in my life, even though it ends tomorrow.
