emotional mysterious slow-paced

Pleasant read but dragged a bit in the middle

Such a great start to the series.

I have seen at least one of the movies made from this series, so I came in with some background for the character that's not in this book and with a generally positive opinion of him. Having read this story, I share the generally positive opinion of Cadfael and his mystery. It didn't inspire feelings of love, but it was enjoyable. I did like the world-building that the author was able to achieve. Not knowing a lot about 12th sentry England and Wales, I felt like I was right there in the scene.

Took me a minute to get into it but by the end I loved it.

Although the language occasionally gets a little quaint, this was a genuine treat. In no small part, I wager, due to its simplicity. With simpler times and simpler people, the author doesn't get bogged down in myriad characters and complex histories. It's the interactions and differing ideals of a the core characters which keeps it interesting and consequently gives we, the readers, the chance to feel a little smarter than we probably are.
