I certainly like the characters, and the plot. The prose at times was a bit tiring.

This is the first mystery I've read so I cannot really judge it as an entry in that genre. That said, I found the story and the characters compelling. What I particularly appreciated is that the side characters and side story lines seemed richly compelling. Unlike in some books, where it seems like the other characters and their stories exist just to move the main story forward, this world felt like it continued existing even when it was, so to say, off screen. As a story set in the past, I did not feel like the it was particularly anchored to the 12th century. The preview of the next book included in this edition made it look like later books in the series pull in a bit more historical context.

All-in-all, a fun read, and I look forward to eventually reading others.

Grandma gifted this to me. An entertaining mystery read.

This is a re-read. I'm not sure when I read this last time but I know I enjoyed it. It's always more than the mystery in a Brother Cadfael book, it's the chemistry of the characters, the setting, the history I learn, and the herbs in the garden and the way they are utilized.
I can definitely recommend this book, series and author.

A medieval monk murder mystery, right up my street.

I loved this book! It has everything & there’s sex and a heady lust for life.

3.5 stars, rounded up because I enjoyed it so much

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. Nothing fancy here - just good writing and a solid mystery (including actual clues! Huzzah!). I think my favorite parts though were that the book had a storyline and several subplots in addition to the mystery, and many interesting and well-developed characters, so it could be enjoyed as a story separate of the mystery. Occasional wry wit or insightful observations of human behavior also kept up the interest. It was not very fast-paced or suspenseful, so it could easily be picked up and read (or listened, as I had both a paper copy and audiobook from the library) for awhile and then easily set aside until next time.

A book that fits my current reading habits, and the library has several more so I definitely will continue with the series.

This is possibly my favorite mystery series ever.

I love Brother Cadfael and this is a great introduction to the series.
