My mother used to watch Mystery on PBS religiously, and teenaged me, though at the time utterly disinterested in -- and too squeamish for -- contemporary British murder, would drop everything to watch if Cadfael came on that week. I'm not sure if it was the nodding-winking religious aspect that appealed to cynical Catholic-school me, or if the historical aspect of the murders felt more removed, safe, and exotic, but I'd always intended to seek out the books at some point. I've learned after the fact that Book 2, [b:One Corpse Too Many|22890999|One Corpse Too Many (Chronicles of Brother Cadfael #2)|Ellis Peters|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1407701976l/22890999._SY75_.jpg|3217787], is a better starting place. This one is a very slow burn and a while to engage me, though the ending is satisfying in that aforementioned nod-wink way. I've added Book 2 to my Overdrive wish list and I know I'll get to it eventually, but I might just revisit the series first on streaming.
A cute little cozy mystery with a fab medieval setting - I'll definitely be seeking out more in this series.
