Sweet and simple

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. The twists and turns were perfect and the miracles divine. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an afternoon’s escape.

slow-paced

Very much enjoyed this story. I had trouble with the start - I suppose it was too many characters for an audiobook. Since I bought as a whispersync, I restarted following along with the ebook for about 1/3 of the book. Then the rest was good. Narrator excellent although I had to increase volume a little.

In this first chronicle of Brother Cadfael, the medieval monk and amateur sleuth, Peters takes us along as the Benedictine brothers travel to a small Welsh village in order to claim the relics of a neglected saint as their own. But when the community's most outspoken opponent of the relocation is murdered, Cadfael sets out to discover the killer and ends up becoming involved in the miracles attendant upon the saint. A wonderful, short mystery that has become a classic in the genre. The television adaptation starring Derek Jacobi is also highly recommended.

My mum had these on her bookcase when I was a teenager and I always thought they might be interesting. I got about 25% of the way in before I gave up though as it's just too slow. I'm not expecting a fast paced action thriller but if this were to be any slower it would going backwards.

The first of the Brother Cadfael books, this the Welsh-born monk returning to his homeland in an entourage from his English Benedictine abbey. They have travelled in hopes of acquiring a saint’s bones so that their abbey will rise in importance. The prior rationalizes this as being all for the glory of the saint, conveniently ignoring the fury of the Welsh villagers who have always considered the saint their own.

This sets up a struggle between the Benedictines and the villagers. As a native Welshman, Cadfael quietly sides with the villagers. He’s there as translator and he does his best to convey the reality of the situation rather than the specific words his proud, vain, and self-important prior uses to justify taking away the saint’s bones.

There’s a murder, possibly a coverup or misdirection, some romantic entanglements, and lots of religious ecstasy and visions. Skeptical Cadfael is less inclined to believe the mystical when the earthly shows the truth of the matter.

A good introduction. I’m looking forward to reading a few more of the Cadfael books.
