Not as malevolent as I thought. Sometimes the truth hurts, sometimes he's talking out of his ass. But can take lots of good and interesting things away from it, hence why it's been in circulation for 500 years.
I enjoyed this a lot, but I do not understand how to reconcile Machiavelli's words here with his Discourses on Livy. The Discourses seems to be in exact opposition of The Prince.

But while it was their opportunities that made these men fortunate, it was their own merit that enabled them to recognize these opportunities and turn them into account, to the glory and prosperity of their country. They who come to the Princedom, as these did, by virtuous paths, acquire with difficulty, but keep with ease.

Hoewel het boek duidelijk bedoeld is voor de toenmalige leiders en erg gespitst is op de toenmalige rommelige politieke situatie in Italië en hoewel het nogal wat achterhaalde onderwerpen behandelt als huurlegers en vestingwerken, is 'De heerser' (oftewel Il Principe) een opvallend actuele en nu nog bruikbare analyse van hoe macht werkt.
Macchiavelli's schrijfstijl is droog, zakelijk en amoreel: hij schrijft niet wat zou moeten zijn, maar hoe het is en hij heeft daarbij geen hoge pet op van de menselijke natuur ('de mensen zijn slecht' zegt hij bij herhaling).
Macchiavelli is vaak kort door de bocht, beperkt en tegenstrijdig in de uitwerking van zijn ideeën en slordig met zijn voorbeelden en dat maakt dit boek geen literair of filosofisch meesterwerk, hoewel zijn gortdroge analyse niet alleen verfrissend, maar nog immer actueel en (m.b.v. de nodige uitleg van de vertaler) zeer leesbaar.
