I enjoyed this audiobook. It was a bit of everything and reminds me of
YouTube essays and documentaries. It’s bite sized and while it doesn’t rile you up emotionally there’s this quiet connection that can reach everyone. I found myself wandering into my own thoughts at a few statements. To me that’s a good book, not too scientific with just enough of personal story to keep you hooked.

The best book I've read all year! Beautiful, fascinating, and an emotional roller coaster. The story literally filled me with wonder. I recommend this 1000% percent.

I thought the parts of this book that were actually about eels were really great -- such a fascinating natural mystery and one that we probably will never solve at this rate. The memoir parts of this book were, at first, charming and then I mostly wanted to skip them because they weren't nearly as compelling or connecting to the science as I had hoped. I also learned that this book is translated from Swedish and originally has a much more religious/spiritual title, which really comes into play in the last couple chapters all of a sudden. No issue with that, just thought it was misrepresented by the cover of the English version. Still enjoyed listening to this audiobook on my walk and is a good one to just have on in the background.

3.5 stars—overall an interesting subject, but felt a bit unfocused and at points over/underdeveloped. svensson has a nice voice, though, and it was a fairly painless short read. i think it doesn't help that lulu miller set a high standard for me with 'why fish don't exist', which i found myself comparing this book against (because of the specific combo of memoir and oceanic natural history). wouldn't strongly recommend for or against this book

It’s more of a memoir than a science book. The graphic descriptions of killing eels put me off.
