I truly didn’t think I’d enjoy this half as much as I actually did. Absolutely spellbinding, and profound for something that involves a creature I had very little care for. A true mediation on the human condition the mysteries of our beautiful little planet.

More a memoir than a cool book on eels. I suppose we really DONT know enough about them to fill even a short book but I was kinda bummed there wasn’t more.

It seems implausible that, with today's technology, we could know so little about the European eel, but it's true and this mystery has fascinated scientists since Aristotle. Lots of great information including a who's who of science that tried to unlock the mysteries and interesting analogies between the eel and the author's life.

This book was 5 pages on eels and 251 pages on eel-adjacent memories. It helped me appreciate how little we know about eels

Not the book's fault. The Eurocentric-ness is just. a lot. You don't speak for all eels, anguilla anguilla, stop acting like you do! But now that I know to expect it, it might be a book i come back to later.

I learned a lot about eels and it also made me cry. I listened to the English audiobook version and the narrator does a great job as well.
