This book is packed full of fascinating material (Eels! Very cool! So mysterious!) and started out pretty strong— but at a certain point it became convoluted and felt like a steady stream of the author regurgitating very detailed histories revolving around different scientists, philosophers, series of events, etc.
Many of these accounts were interesting, but they were so heavy handed and each one felt less and less relevant (and less impactful) as the book went on. It also started feeling less intentionally organized, and more like the author just got tired and started throwing his thoroughly-researched notes out there one after the other.
It just seems like they were trying to do too much in one little book— there’s no need to cram every eel-mentioning morsel of research, scientific discovery, literary reference, and religious imagery to ever exist throughout history into a book just because it’s a book about eels. Especially the tangents that are kind of a stretch to say they’re even eel-related.
So, in short: contains A LOT of interesting information, but I’m not optimistic that I’ll actually retain any of it because of how much skimming I ended up doing.

I listened to the book and found it lovely and engaging. I recommend this to anyone interested in the natural world or who just wants to read something gentle and well-written.
Interesting book; equal parts natural history of the European eel and memoir of the author's growing up in Sweden (throughout which fishing for eels with played a significant role).
Fun, quick, and a real pleasure to read! Plus I got to tell my friends bunch of eel facts, even when they had clearly heard enough.
Muy buen libro. Imposible clasificarle dentro de un género. Por momentos parece un libro de divulgación zoológica, por otros una novela existencialista. Muy recomendable
