Immersive, detailed, and emotionally charged from beginning to end. A slow start as characters are introduced, but the pace picks up and I found myself really invested in the well being of many of the characters. The characters were complex and interesting and I loved getting insight into each generation of the family. At parts the story felt really grounded and straight to the point and at other times was more abstract and emotional and I enjoyed that back and forth. There are a lot of difficult topics in this book, so mind the content warnings, but really an amazing book.

It is well written and the character compelling. I was not expecting it to be about sexual abuse.

This is an extremely hard read.
Not recommended for everyone.
Trigger Warnings include but are not limited to:
Child Abuse, Alcoholism, Suicide, Depression, Child Neglect, Sexual Abuse of a minor

Was beautifully written, descriptions were amazing. Made you feel disgusted, violated, and feared for the main character Sunshine. The storytelling and setting are 5-star. Put so much into so little. Took me a month to finish this book, that is how hard of a read this is. Did an incredible job, but wow that was a lot to take in.
If you like reading books that make you feel disgusted and get angry with the main character. Maybe you will like this.

A heavy emotional read about intergenerational trauma with a beautiful voice that will sweep you away. If you're southern and of the pre internet age this book will dredge all those hurt corners of your soul, summer stung childhood fears, with a rawness you may have forgotten. You worry deeply for Sunshine who does not comprehend her troubles and feel for Lou and her struggle to grow beyond her own.

though sunshine does not escape unmarred, by the end you know she will be alright, but frankly at points I went oh god why am I reading this poor girls pain, please let her get free. Its cathartic as it is heartbreaking for anyone who saw or was or was adjacent to familial abuse, sexual assault,  and unbreakable cycles of unspoken mental illness in a space and time such things werent touched with a ten foot pole.
