Sweet, moving story of a young girl who loses her hearing after an illness when she was four. The "phonic ear" that makes it possible for her to hear at school also makes her self-conscious and resentful. Her responses and the responses of the other children in her neighborhood felt realistic and well-done. It's a warm-hearted book, and the illustrations are charming. Would be a great book for anyone who is trying to understand the experience of someone who is "differently abled," especially elementary school ages.

A great look at the challenges of being a deaf child in the US in the mid-'70s, and of the struggles of being a kid in general.

LOVE. I have re read this book so many times ice memorized it
I really liked this book. It's by turns humorous and sad. I could feel the character's frustrations, and I empathized with her decisions. Being different when you're a kid isn't easy. This book provided some good insight into what it's like to live with something others see as a disability.

really good message and cute story that shows the importance of making sure all students can access the classroom! some interesting moments that maybe aren’t for kids or don’t preach the best things
