A sweet little graphic novel, about what it's like to be deaf but wear a hearing aid. I can't wait to see the finished version with full color illustrations. It reminded me a bit of SMILE, and will be great to recommend to any young graphic novel reader.

In this Newbery Honor winning graphic memoir, ears play a major role. Cece and her family and friends are all drawn with rabbit features. Cece became deaf at age 4 after a bout with meningitis. Her story is both universal (making friends, losing friends, dealing with school) and particular (navigating life as a deaf person). This is a wonderful book about growing up feeling different yet wanting to fit in. I will say I was surprised at a couple of scenes where Cece's mom is smoking cigarettes and having a glass of wine. I questioned the value of such scenes in a children's book until I realized it was a memoir and therefore Cece's reality. Those scenes could lead to constructive conversation with children on several levels. A good story bound to increase understanding and empathy in readers.

so good. Cece tells her story of how she became deaf at age 4, getting hearing aids, lip reading, signing, and her overall experience in elementary school. the book is a graphic novel that I read with my 8 year old and it was so good at helping the reader see things from her perspective while making it clear that it was her experience and isn't necessarily everyone's who is hard of hearing.

I picked up a ARC of this at Comic Con. Cece's portrayal of growing up deaf is also about growing up - she describes situations that anyone could relate to. She also had specific challenges because of her hearing loss. Sleepovers were tough once the lights were out.

The art in this is great. The ARC is in black and white but specifies (several times) that the book itself will be in color.

Adorable and poignant. I'm going to find a kid to pass this along to ASAP.
