4.22 AVERAGE

It was a little boring.

A very endearing look into the perspective of a Deaf girl growing up in the 80’s where her deafness was very visible due to the large hearing aids that were used at the time.

4.5 stars

My 10-year-old couldn't put this down. El Deafo was a great book about a girl who thought everyone looked down on her because of her hearing aids. I loved seeing things work out for her and how she was finally able to accept herself for who she was. It was touching and funny and I can't wait to read more from CeCe Bell.

Loved this! <3

Annotation originally written Mar. 2018 for a course on children's literature.

El Deafo describes Cece’s experience growing up deaf using hearing aids and a Phonic Ear from kindergarten through grade five in small town America. Cece discovers that the Phonic Ear allows her to hear her teacher no matter where the teacher is in the school. This serves as inspiration for Cece’s alter ego, El Deafo, who Cece imagines standing up for herself when people treat her differently because of her deafness. The narrative explores both challenges particular to being deaf (such as being judged solely for being deaf or the difficulties of lipreading) as well as challenges with friendships and crushes that many children may experience. The colourful, cartoony style, in which characters are portrayed as rabbits, make this graphic novel appealing and accessible to young readers. Age 7+.

Cute

cute, but not amazing. I'm not 100% convinced the age group it's aimed towards will love it and deal with it's length. seeing the adult appeal moreso, but I could be wrong about that.

Omg this is the cutest book I’ve read in ages! It’s a graphic novel and I finished it in about an hour or two. It’s seriously lovely and heart warming AND also educational. This is the kinda book I want to read to my kids
