I liked this just fine, but it wasn't as mind-blowingly good as I expected. I think the animal illustrations were off-putting for me (not an animal book person). It also felt longer than I cared for. But the audiobook which I used concurrently was excellent. Readers hear as Cece does with some words being muffled sometimes. Really cultivates empathy in the listener.
When Cece loses her hearing at age four, she enters a new world – and it is one where she just wishes people would stop talking slowly and loudly and just treat her like the normal kid she is. While the title leads one to think that it will be a book about disability, it is instead a story about Cece trying to find her way through childhood obstacles, the same obstacles every child faces, but with the added obstacle of other people’s difficulty in dealing with Cece’s hearing loss.
It was wonderfully refreshing to read a story with a character who was not “cookie cutter.” Having worked with people with disabilities in my first career, I usually cringe when reading portrayals in books. It was nice to read a story that was so honest and not one bit degrading. This is a great read for people of all ages.

This is an interesting look into the life of someone who becomes hard of hearing at a young age and has to go through elementary school and middle school being different. She starts off at a school for the Deaf that focuses on lip reading and signing, but she is uprooted to a new school and has to have the teachers wear a microphone when teaching. I've kept my eye out for books who have characters that are deaf, and so far I have found three. With that being said, I have not been searching for them this is just the number of books that someone who reads about 120 books a year has seen....But before I mount a high horse and ride off on a tangent...
This book is great, it's a view that is not often portrayed and it is a topic near and dear to my heart. A graphic novel that presents topics like - bullying, being friends with people who are not real friends, being different, having a disability, being inclusive, and just being a kid and a preteen. For kids fourth grade on up though if you are doing a read a long I think that third graders would enjoy this too.

Cece Bell seems like the kind of person I want to have a cup of coffee with.
I loved this book. My eleven year old daughter recommended it to me, and I am so glad she did! Our differences are not a bad thing, and things that DO make us different can help bring us together rather than push us further apart.
I don't know why it took me so long to read this. Author Cece Bell became deaf at age four, after an illness. This book shows how she coped with this, specifically focusing on her superhero alter ego, El Deafo.
I really liked the way this was illustrated. The text would fade to show Cece was having trouble hearing, or it would be gibberish to show that she could hear, but not understand.
Overall, this is a really interesting read about trying to fit in as a kid and accepting yourself.

I liked this one! I bought it for my son who loves graphic novels and decided to read it to myself also. It was great! I appreciated how she showed friendships that were good and not so good. I also appreciated the overall message. I'm sure my son will like it too!
