A collection of essays that showed me a fraction of the valuable work that's been eviscerated since January of this year.

Depressing in part because these stories are of the very people the current administration is so intent on vilifying and eliminating.
But also hopeful and a good reminder of why it all matters and why it’s worth standing up and fighting for the good that can be done.

I absolutely loved this book. I read it in one day. If you are a government employee feeling beleagured and unappreciated - or if you think government employees are mindless bureaucrats who do nothing all day and collect a paycheck- read this book!! It will lift your spirits and change your outlook on government employees. This book highlights the amazing people who work for the federal government and work to solve some of society’s biggest problems- with little fanfare and no desire for recognition.  The book is comprised of essays about government workers including a former miner and Ph.d in engineering working to keep mines from collapsing, the head of the National Cemetery Association who runs the most lauded workplace in the country, an IRS agent who catches cyber criminals, a JPL employee designing the next version of the Hubble telescope, and a scientist whose efforts save children from a rare disease. Their stories are inspiring and the book reads like a riveting novel while profiling federal employees doing their everyday jobs while performing extraordinary service for their country.  By the end of the book all readers will appreciate the extraordinary treasure that government employees are and understand how important the federal government is to solving our nations problems and contributing to its advancement.  I feel like buying multiple copies of this book and handing them out to all the federal government doubters and haters.
