Indie comics are awful.

My initial excitement over Chris Ware editing this selection waned often once into the book. Too many of his selections are simply solipsistic, whiny (and often badly drawn) harangues. Ware is one of few who can make this type of comic art work and gives too much latitude to too many mediocre artists.

Some good, some bad/skipped over. A lot felt short or cut off abruptly.

anthologies like this are hard to rate - i like to use them more to find new people to follow. i liked what i saw, up to a certain point about two-thirds through where i was just baffled. new names to follow: ivan brunetti, jeffrey brown, kevin huizenga. have the urge to reread black hole & fun home now - the more i read excerpts the more i realized i misjudged alison bechdel the first go round.

Standouts here were Jonathan Bennett (he needs to publish and/or TRL needs to purchase one of his graphic novel(s)), Lauren Weinstein, Vanessa Davis, and a bunch of old favorites. Only skipped over a few in this one, so I must like Chris Ware's taste too.

There were some panels I really liked, and some that were not so hot. There was an excerpt of an Adrian Tomine graphic novel that I've already read, which was kind of a neat coincidence.

I enjoyed this diverse collection of comics (thank god no superhero comics).
I am new to the world of graphic novels, but the artist Gilbert Hernandez has already left a bitter taste in my mouth. His comics are lewd and trashy.

I had high expectations, which were definitely met. The few pass-over comics in it are more than made up for by others. It's not worth pointing out which ones I preferred over others because - and this is stupid to say - but there's something in here for everybody. Beautiful and well-written, you'll finish it with at least 3 new names you'll want to pursue.

This one was good, but not as good as the 2006. I partuclarly loved Glen in Bed by Kevin Huizenga. It is adorable.
