I really enjoyed the romance between the two characters, but the theme of domestic abuse (with the abuser lurking just off-page much of the book) made it a very tense read and I feel like we should’ve spent more time on our MC healing from trauma than on the flirty romance. I also really, really didn’t like that when she had a trauma response near the end and it was her who ended up apologizing for “messing everything up.” Trauma victims need to be understood and given space, not made to apologize.

Major trigger warnings for domestic abuse and attempted rape.

When I heard January LaVoy introduce herself on this audiobook, I knew I was in for something good. This was one of those more-than-just-a-romance books; something with more depth and substance than the usual love story. I loved Jake and Naya's journey. I love how they clicked and how they joked, their vulnerability and their intimacy. But they both bring baggage and it's getting in the the way of them being honest with each other and maybe even with themselves. Will they be able to get through these obstacles?

This was my first Denise Williams book, but definitely not my last!

I enjoyed this one but it was not light and easy, and deals with a lot of subject matter that could be triggering for readers without warning.

Heavy domestic trauma, including an attempted rape. The romance didn't give me enough warm fuzzy feelings to make up for that, lots of descriptive sex, not a ton of emotional development.
