The only thing bringing down my rating is the length. Great scary story but be ready for a long haul.

An utterly unforgettable and beautifully written horror story. This book hooks you in the first 50 pages and it never lets you go, even given its length. That's the mark of a master storyteller. And best of all, Due's horror has enough emotional heft to shatter your heart. She writes about grief and fear in such a palpable way that it's hard not to get invested -- and destroyed -- as the story goes on.

Finally reading my first Tananarive Due book, and it completely lived up to the well deserved hype! It’s a mix between a haunted house, ancestral magic (voodoo) and family saga, with deep rooted characters in the center through the Toussaint family. This is a slow build, but once arrived, there are some fantastic eerie horror scenes. Overall I really enjoyed this, and can’t wait to read through her backlist!

I was held captive by this horror novel for so many reasons. And "held captive" in the right expression because horrible things happen in this story and I didn't want to know what terrible thing might happen next, but I couldn't bear to stop reading. I loved how the novel switched viewpoints throughout and I found the primary ones to be equally fascinating.
I was very interested in Angela's and Corey's points-of-view and the peek at Marie's diary pages was wonderful. I did not care for the brief glimpses into Tariq's head, however, but it did increase my uneasiness and fright
In terms of the book's ability to frighten me... it certainly did its job and did it well. One kind of supernatural occurrence in the novel scared me especially because it's the type that I would most dread happening to me, out of all the fictional awful things that are possible. It's a testament to the quality of the writing and the suspense of the plot that I kept reading, shivering the entire time.

I couldn’t focus on this book

Epic horror that despite the title isn't the usual haunted house tripe. Well-paced writing, great flawed characters, just plain fun, lots of creeps (had to stop reading this one before bed and save it for day reading).
