Wonderful storytelling. Ran a bit slow in the middle, but the changes in perspectives and time jumps help keep the reader engaged. I wish there had been more to the final baka scene and it felt like we still don't get the full story of what happened between Marie and the baka.

4.5. I see why this often gets recommended for people who are looking for something that feels like Stephen King but isn't.
I liked it, but I had to get all the way to the end to decide I did. It was really long, crawled in spots, but I loooove the premise and ending.
Getting real tired of casual fatmisia just being there all the time in everything, sigh.

Did I just find another favorite author? I think so!
This was excellent despite me thinking it was a tad bit long. This had all the elements I want in horror books and definitely kept me engaged throughout the entire story. I would love to see this turned into a movie or a limited series. I can’t wait to read more of her backlist!

5⭐️ One of the best books I’ve read!! Ms. Due will forever be one of my favorite authors of all time and I plan to read EVERYTHING she has written and will write!
The storytelling pulled me in immediately- enjoyed how the author created vivid scenes, conversations, and characters. We change perspectives in time and follow a family & the legacy of their house. Y’all have hear me say this many times: I don’t work with lwa. But I respect them.

What did you call a miracle in reverse?
Three stars. Minus one star for the ending and another for Myles' entire character.
This was creepy and just what I was looking for as we head into the fall and Halloween. The lore and the characters are richly developed, and there is a sense of dread that hangs over everything that makes for some great, terrible scenes. My only critiques are:
Myles. Myles was completely unnecessary and quite annoying. I cringed every time Angela interacted with him or had to deal with his condescending B.S. This is a horror story. I don't need a dumb second-chance story tacked on. 😫 (It doesn't help that the second-chance trope is my least favorite romance trope.)
There were so many more interesting relationships to examine: Marie and Angela. Angela and Corey. Angela and Tariq. Marie and Corey. Miles was such an annoying third-wheel; I couldn't figure out why he was in the story. Perhaps to explore the idea of missed chances and lost opportunities, but that could have been done with Tariq.
That ending.
If you're looking for some black horror or speculative fiction, I recommend checking this one out.

Spoiler
The ending is basically a giant reset button, meaning there are no lasting consequences for anyone. People come back to life, relationships are restored every terrible thing is simply erased. At no point before this is there any hint that Angela or Marie have the power to go back in time and undue the curse. And as nice and sweet as the happy ending was — especially the scene where Corey completes the cleansing ceremony with his mother — it didn't feel satisfying after everything these characters have been through. If you're looking for some black horror or speculative fiction, I recommend checking this one out.
