I have to say that this book really took me by surprise. I never really know what to expect from books like this anymore - sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them. Honestly, if I was going to rate this like I was some kind of real reviewer, I'd probably have to rate it lower, but as a reader I completely enjoyed it (is "enjoyed" really the right word?). Here are the reasons I loved it:

Alex is kick-ass. She's a bit of a whiner, and a little bit of a brat, but I kind of like that about her. I liked that she was like a normal human being (even if she's not exactly human), because I get sick of characters that are in the "real world" and act completely weird. She seemed like any normal teenager. But, then, her bravery seemed believable. A lot of the time, I feel like characters act braver than they have any right to act in a story - they do or say things that are completely out of character. But Alex has this deep seated strength that comes out when she's in precarious situations. I loved that about her.

Aiden is hot. Can't pretend like I didn't think he was. The romance was nice - I liked that it was kind of simple - not so mushy that I wanted to puke. And I guess it was plausible...in a way. That would be where I would have my main issue - the relationship between Aiden and Alex, but, whatever, I liked it.

Seth was a jerk, but I have a feeling he'll endear himself to me in the next couple of books (I see this stuff coming a mile away these days).

Oh, and let me just say, I LOVED Caleb. I love it when there are people in the story that are amazing all on their own - a secondary character that has been thoughtfully and artistically created. Caleb had depth that you rarely see outside of the main character or the romantic interest. And this story needed him. His relationship with Alex shows that she has loyalty not only to the boy she loves but to the boy that is her friend. And his loyalty to her - man, I wish I had a friend like him.

We'll have to see how things go in the next few books.

Reread: 23/08/2020 - the ending was so sad. But that was so sweet that she did that. I really liked reading Alex’s character and seeing her develop and grow. The part with her mother as a demon and Caleb that was almost hard to read but I’m glad that she got out of that. It gave me similarities between Vampire Academy but it was also it’s own story. I’m interested to see how it will be for Alex, Seth and Aiden. What will happen between them.

I enjoyed this audiobook enough that I started it the day before HOFAS release and finished it on release day.

It was ok. I felt like it could've been better, but I guess the rest of the series might be good. The story just felt like it was missing something.

An amazing, entertaining read. Poor Alex... But her silver-lining is her destiny for greater things. And Like the yee old saying goes, with great power comes with great responsibility.

Like Daimon, I just didn’t like the dialogue. Honestly some of the things the characters were saying were so cringey that it pulled me out of the book.

I also just didn’t like the amount of attempted sexual assaults. It wasn’t happening often but I think one time is pushing it so it just made be uncomfortable. The bits of misogyny weren’t helping either. These were all things that the FMC had to deal with and I didn’t like the story or characters enough to continue through that.

Overall okay book. Like able characters and nice conflict, however, the plot was just wayyyyy too predictable and the book was too much of a rip off of vampire academy for me to get into. The writing style is super easy to fall into, however I had a big issue with the world building-or lack thereof(especially the history of the world). Love this author... Didn't care for this book very much. I probably will read the rest of the series to see what happens but it's pretty low on my tbr pile! I probably wouldn't recommend this book to others... I would send them to the VA series!!
